City Listening: a workshop in (found) choreography for the camera
Thursday 6 November, 1pm
Tickets €15.
City Listening is a workshop led by choreographers & artists Lucy Cash and Chloë Sayers especially designed for Light Moves 25 and suitable for all levels of screendance experience.
The workshop is inspired by the notion of creating a portrait of a city through its movement – of people, weather, animals and plant life. We will go foraging (or *gleaning) for movement & images in Limerick’s streets, People’s Park and waterside; finding ways to tune our senses and slow down enough to discover extraordinary movement in the everyday world around us.
Beginning at Dance Limerick, Lucy and Chloë will share some of their own approaches to finding choreography in the everyday. We think of ‘found’ choreography as movement discovered by chance, through paying heightened attention to the world around us.
We’ll explore some simple somatic exercises, opening curiosity towards what it might mean to take an embodied approach to what we see, using our eyes not only to see, but also to listen – letting the world permeate our sense of sight rather than the usual way we often experience our visual sense. Using phones as cameras we will gather material individually or in pairs before returning to Dance Limerick to create an instant portrait of the city on November 6th 2025.
*gleaning originally meant to gather leftovers after a harvest, but French filmmaker Agnes Varda borrowed it to describe the act of rediscovering lost things and giving new meaning to neglected objects, places and people; expanding its meaning to include the act of collecting images and encounters.
